Parents and children, Kanga Village 1965-2010

Children are highly valued on Mafia Island, and are frequently referred to as ‘our wealth’. As a result, the birth rate is still high, even though contraception is now available. Improved health care has resulted in the lowering of maternal and child mortality. The pictures show the extent to which parents and grandparents enjoy the company of children.
